It’s been an exciting year for 3D and we’ve enjoyed reporting on  the latest developments in 3D education and entertainment   As we begin preparations for 2012, the future of 3D looks bright.  Price points of 3DTVs are continuing to drop and 3D channels are sprouting up worldwide.  The demand for 3D content is increasing as more and more television consumers learn that the amazing immersive quality of the 3D movies that they see in theaters can actually be experienced in their homes.     And the power of 3D is being embraced by educators worldwide.  Recent studies continue to prove that 3D provides a ”wow” factor in class and increasingly educational facilities are using 3D projectors and learning resources to add a new dimension to education.

3D continues to dominate at the box office and the demand for 3D content is global.  In 2011, one in three moviegoers saw a 3D movie.  Foreign audiences are consuming 3D films with great enthusiasm.  Box offices numbers this summer proved that the international market for 3D is huge and hungry for an even greater supply of 3D content.

As we enter 2012, 3D has become the most viable avenue to revitalize the consumer electronics industry.   Many industry insiders are anxiously looking forward to all of the new announcements that will come from the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

All of this means it’s going to be another exciting year for 3D entertainment – both for consumers and industry professionals.

3D Proves a Hit in the Classroom – 3D Learning Tools Positive for Pupils

3D StudentsA study of the impact of 3D in the classroom has found that it improves test results by an average of 17%.

ResearchThe research, conducted in seven schools across Europe, found that 3D-enabled learning tools helped children concentrate more and led shy children to speak up in class discussions.

The study assessed 740 students in schools across France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Turkey, the UK and Sweden.  On average, 86% of pupils in 3D classrooms improved in test results.  It also found that attention levels soared – with 92% of the class paying attention during 3D lessons.

”It grabbed children’s attention and this carried on beyond the 3D episode, it seemed to trigger an interest in learning that maintained through the rest of the lesson,” said Professor Anne Bamford, who led the study.  Read OnDownload the 3D Education Research Paper

The Science and Future of 3D Films With Legend3D Founder Dr. Barry Sandrew

Forbes recently published a three part story on The Science and Future of 3D Films.  The story surrounded an interview with Dr. Barry Sandrew, Founder, COO and CTO of Legend3D – the largest U.S.-based 3D conversion studio in the film business.  Dr. Sandrew explained why 3D provides an advantage both artistically and commercially, and why 3D is here to stay.

PL Halloween”When it comes to 3D, everyone is still in a learning phase,” Dr. Sandrew stated. ”Some directors who understand the medium are aided by truly knowledgeable stereographers at every stage of their productions, and then there are other directors, who also have a sensitivity toward 3D that prefer to use a stereographer only in a post production mode.  In any visual effects-heavy film, the mastery of the director and cinematographer/stereographer is key to the creation of good or exceptional visuals, and this reliance on both technical and creative expertise is not any different in 3D.  3D offers the filmmaker an unprecedented ability to influence the memory, emotions and even primitive survival instincts of the audience in a manner that is impossible in 2D.  When employed correctly and strategically, and when the appropriate knowledge base is leveraged, 3D can be a very powerful creative medium for the director.”

Dr. Sandrew proceeded to make a fascinating point about how the literal physical experience of viewing a 3D film speaks to the artistic advantage it supplies to filmmakers, ”Experiencing the depth of three dimensions in a theater environment therefore has the effect of breaking down the ʻfourth wall,ʼ or the separation of the audience from the action on the screen, and makes it a more personal experience.

”With 3D becoming a big motivation for consumers to go ahead and buy a new HD television, manufacturers are increasingly going to want to supply the 3D option.  In the future,” Dr. Sandrew states, ”it will be difficult to buy an HDTV set that is not 3D-ready!”

In closing, Dr. Sandrew had this final message about the state of the 3D industry, and its prospects for the future: ”There is a very exciting outlook for 3D. Anyone with an accurate knowledge base of the industry recognizes that 3D is here to stay and that, in a relatively short period of time, it will become ubiquitous.”  Read On

3D in Education, 3D Not Harmful According to The American Optometric Associations Recent Public Health Report – Recently the American Optometric Association (AOA) released a significant public health report entitled ”3D in the Classroom: See Well, Learn Well.”  The report affords nine core themes: 1) the benefits of viewing 3D in the classroom;  2) the statement of fact that there is no medical evidence suggesting that 3D viewing is harmful;  3) a quirky time line of 3D in history;  4) how our own depth perception works;  5) how we can tell if we are unable to see 3D correctly;  6) how 3D display actually works;  7) research-vetted strategies for effectively managing the 3D classroom in the K-20 setting;  8) the challenges of the 3D viewing experience and what we can do when things don’t seem right; and 9) the promising future of 3D.  Read On

Are Improved 2D to 3D Conversions Key to 3D’s Future?  Shooting with a stereo 3D rig and converting existing films from standard 2D format to stereo 3D are two different methods of achieving the same effect on paper.  However, in reality conversions have been criticized and downplayed due to their lower quality when compared to movies like Avatar – that were made with 3D in mind from the get go.  Many film studios are trying to perfect 2D to 3D conversions right now. This approach allows for films to be reborn or recreated for a new audience.  Audiences often have nostalgic and fond memories of many films that they would love to see again. Doing so in 3D would be a whole new experience for them.   Read On.

The future of 3D TV content

If you have recently treated yourself or the family to a new 3D TV, or are considering making an investment in 3D for the home soon, then you will no doubt want to know what’s in store for the future of decent quality 3D content.

Hollywood has come under flack of late, with a rep from 3D TV manufacturer Panasonic claiming that Tinseltown’s rush to produce ”badly converted” 3D movies in the wake of the success of James Cameron’s Avatar has ”damaged 3D”.

It’s certainly true that even the most impressive camera and projection technology cannot improve a bad script or a poorly-directed movie. But where does this current feeling of unease about 3D leave 3D TV viewers? Where do producers and directors hope to see commercial 3D TV programming from the likes of of Sky and Virgin Media going in 2012 and beyond?

While mainstream 3D TV coverage is likely to continue to be dominated by major sporting events such as the forthcoming London 2012 Olympics and other types of ”event TV” – is there also a chance that we might soon start to see more investment from broadcasters in decent new 3D drama and documentary content?

Plus, it’s not only broadcasters who are shaping the future of 3D TV content creation and delivery, with manufacturers such as Samsung and Sony recently launching their own 3D TV-on-demand services, to boost early adopter sales of their latest 3D television sets. Read more

PASSMORE LAB NEWS
As far as trade shows go, it’s been a busy few weeks for the 3D industry.  From 3D TVs and consumer electronics at IFA in Berlin, 3D home cinema projectors at the CEDIA Expo in Indianapolis, 3D broadcast and production at IBC in Amsterdam, the 3D Entertainment Summit and 3D Gaming Summit in Hollywood and 3D programming at MIPCOM in Cannes, the conclusion from each of these events is that 3D is continuing its exponential growth.

Two weeks ago, we attended MIPCOM 2011, held annually in Cannes, which is the world’s largest entertainment content trade show.  Consisting primarily of international content producers, distributors and buyers, for us, it was a great opportunity to learn new trends, solidify global business partnerships and further understand 3D broadcast distribution channels.  This year’s programming spent a lot of time  focusing on 3D.  We are looking forward exploring the many new opportunities presented during the show.

We also recently attended  ASTC, the Annual Association of Technology and Science Centers in Baltimore.  We’d like to thank all of the attendees and exhibitors who visited us at the Cinemuse booth during the show.  Our 3D programming and hardware solutions attracted a warm reception and a lot of attention in the ASTC exhibition hall.  Through our consulting expertise and existing partnerships with hardware providers, we can offer a 3D turnkey solution for museums and science centers of all sizes.  And, with several new 3D science films in development, PassmoreLab will continue its focus on the production of quality ‘3D learning experiences’ for the museum and educational market.

From trade shows around the world to online reports, every day brings fascinating news about the latest advancements in the production and delivery of 3D content to consumers.  Each month we will continue to report on the latest news from PassmoreLab and the newest industry developments that will dictate the future of 3D entertainment.

Happy Halloween!

MIPCOM 2011 at Palais des Festivals, Cannes – 3D Highlights from the Show

mipcom On October 3-6, 2011, we attended MIPCOM 2011 – the world’s largest international entertainment content expo.  This year’s annual show in Cannes brought together broadcasters, distributors and content producers from around the world.  Here’s some 3D topics that stood out:MipCom

- 3D panels solidified 3D statistics we’ve been hearing all year.  During the Creating a new 3D Entertainment Experience panel, Akira Shimazu, Sony’s Senior General Manager for the 3D & BD Project Management Division presented these statistics:
  • Over 50 3D films will be released in 2011.  Six of the top ten worldwide grossing films of all time are 3D titles.
  • Over 100 3D titles will be released on 3D Blu-ray in 2011.
  • Over 100 3D games will be released for the PlayStation 3 in 2011.
  • 70% of Japanese homes have 3D TV’s.
  • 40% of homes in Europe, China and US have 3D TV’s.

- BBC is finally entering into the 3D realm.  The BBC announced it’s doing some test shoots of its highest rated TV show Antiques Road Show in 3D.  During the panel, BBC made mention of their ”trick of the trade” 3D shooting method.  Because shooting a six-part series in 3D is so expensive, the BBC will take the series and simultaneously shoot a ninety minute or commercial hour 3D special.

- BSkyB 3D Channel in the UK has commissioned new original 3D shows.  The BSkyB 3D lineup includes The Bachelor King, about the lives of penguins for Christmas, and Kew 3D, about the fauna and flora at England’s magnificent Kew Gardens.

 - NHK launches 3D video bank.   Hoping to take advantage of an expected demand for 3D content, Japanese broadcaster NHK has launched a library of 3D video which includes 250 minutes of stereoscopic content.

- ESPN 3D announced that Monday Night Football (American) is coming.  Bryan Burns, Vice President Strategic Business Planning and Development for ESPN, broke the news after showing a clip of fan reactions to watching games in 3D on 3DTVs placed in bars.  One person said, ”My next TV purchase will be a 3DTV.  I watch more sports than any other program.”  This is an eight-year, $15.2 billion, deal made with the National Football League.

- Advertising in 3D.  At the moment, broadcasters are paying a premium for 3D content with hopes that 3D will be the next big thing to help increase channel subscriptions.  According to the various speakers at the 3D Entertainment Experience panel, the cost implication is still high to shoot a short commercial in both 2D and 3D because of the need special 3D cameras, stereographers, proper lighting and more.  The best way for advertising to succeed in 3D is to look to top quality 2D – 3D conversion houses.  You can convert a 2-3 minute commercial for a fraction of the cost of shooting it in native 3D and still turn the same high quality results as shooting it in native 3D.

PassmoreLab Announces Pre-Production of its Latest 3D Educational Documentary Film – Dinosaur Hunter 3D!
T-RexJoin our team of paleontologists, filmmakers and explorers into the depths of the jungle, underground caves, and even our own neighborhoods to find evidence that dinosaurs were all around us, living in our world, breathing our air and leaving evidence of their incredible lives here. This is not an animated fantasy dinosaur film — this is a high energy science adventure, where you get to experience how scientists work and learn in the real world.  Extracting saber tooth tigers, Mastodons and digging to find the mysterious footprints of ancient running animals preserved in stone.  This film gives you a taste of the lifestyle of true modern paleontologists.  In addition, this production uses native 3D in 4k resolution to make the viewer experience crisp, up-close and alive.

ASTC 2011 – Highlights From the Annual Meeting of the Association of Technology and Science Centers in Baltimore, MD
ASTC The ASTC conference was a new experience for us .  With our distributors: Cinemuse, representing our 3D educational films Physics of Surfing 3D, MicroWorlds 3D, Ocean Voyagers 3D (Narrated by Meryl Streep), Fuzzy Baby Animals, The Extreme Nature of Bats 3D; and K2 Communications  representing Inner Earth 3D, we presented PassmoreLab’s 3D science documentary productions to museums and discovery centers that are interested in 3D content.Astc2

”One hurdle of 3D in the museum place is the lack of 3D equipment and understanding that it does not take hundreds of thousands of dollars to display 3D in your Museum,” said Michael Williams PassmoreLab’s Director of Content and Distribution.  ”Through Cinemuse we are offering a portable ”all in one” 3D solution manufactured by AV Rover

AV Rover
”With this cart, you can simply roll it up to an exhibit and playback 3D on a wall, or a portable screen for only thousands of dollars and you need nothing else. It contains a projector 2D/3D, amplifier, 3D computer and the 3D glasses.”   Williams went on to explain that 3D is not something to have ”just because” its hot right now. ”People actually retain more, tend to ”want” to watch more and, best of all, have more fun while viewing programs in 3D. 3D can also be a very profitable addition for a museum as you can ‘up charge’ for the experience.”
”All of our science documentary films were originally conceived and produced for the museum audience.  It’s exciting to be working with companies like Cinemuse, K2 and AVRover and to be able to deliver our educational productions to science centers and children’s museums that may have otherwise thought 3D was unaffordable,” said James Humann, PassmoreLab’s Director of Business Affairs.

OPINION: Can nature documentaries boost 3D adoption?  Europe’s leading 3D source, 3D Radar, suggests that documentaries (not sports and movies!) that will increase viewers demand for 3D programming.  ”… The truth is that by broadening 3D content away from sport and movies into a massively popular documentary arena (as well as the Arts), the potential audience that want to be viewing the content grows rapidly.  And with the filming and understanding of modern 3D growing on a daily basis – the quality of the content is improving fast.  It might not be quite where the manufacturers want it to be right now – but 3D is beginning to poke its furry nose through the screen of gimmickry.”  Read On

New trends in media viewership are evolving, and it is exciting to observe the way consumers are responding to these developments and technological advancements in this ”infotainment” age. Nearly every day there is a new 3D technology announcement in the news.

For example, the deployment of 3D internet TV is boosting the internet TV market.  More and more smart TV ”apps” are becoming available and eventually this will likely be the new way we receive programming content into our homes.

The new LG Thrill 3D smartphone was launched on on Sept 4 to compete with the HTC Evo 3D.   Both products are currently being heavily advertised on broadcast TV.  It appears that ”glasses-free 3D” handheld devices are here to stay and will change the way 3D content is delivered to consumers.

In theaters this weekend, the 3D re-release of The Lion King was number one in the box office – earning more than the combined total of the next three highest grossing films.  The Lion King earned $30.15 million from 2,330 locations, which is the fourth-highest September opening ever.  Distributor Walt Disney Pictures reported that the audience was 59% under 25 years old and 56% female, and 3D presentations accounted for 92% of the gross.

On Saturday, October 1, 2011, PassmoreLab will be premiering a restored, colorized and newly 3D converted version of Ed Woodʼs 1958 sci-fi classic Plan 9 From Outer Space at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles as a part of the 7th Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute.

On the Museum and Science Center front, PassmoreLab is very excited to announce the opening of Inner Earth at the San Diego Natural History Museum.  The film will run through November 30th.

WidescreenThe Entertainment Industry publication Widescreen Review focuses on home entertainment’s future-high-definition widescreen digital surround home theater presentations and the supporting technology.  In the latest issue, publisher Gary Reber conducted an in depth interview with PassmoreLab’s founder, Greg Passmore.  During the interview, they discussed all aspects of the current 3D industry including native capture and 2D-to-3D conversion.  You can read the entire article on our site at PassmoreLab/News.

Launch of LG’s Optimus 3D – The World’s First Tri-Dual Architecture Smartphone with full glasses free 3D

Other News

Inition_LGOptimus_de3D production and technology specialist Inition is rolling out Europe’s largest bespoke in-store glasses free3D campaign this month to promote the launch of LG’s Optimus 3D – the World’s First Tri-Dual Architecture Smartphone with full 3D.

The campaign went live in 20 Carphone Warehouse hero stores and 4 Best Buy stores in the UK last week (plus a 2D version is showing at an additional 330 stores). Update 19/07/2011: These Carphone Warehouse/Best Buy Europe stores have been equipped with autostereoscopic screens from Alioscopy. They will be used to support each major product release throughout the year.

A further two hundred Alioscopy 24” glasses-free display screens, supplied by Inition, will be installed in mobile phone retail outlets in selected European countries this month. The network is currently being rolled out in Poland – Germany is next, followed by Spain, France, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, and Benelux.

The in-store screens showcase the 3D functionality of the LG Optimus 3D, which lets you record 3D videos and take 3D photos, before watching them back on the phone without the need for 3D glasses. The video shows the LG Optimus 3D used to record stunts performed by freerunners; the stunts are then shared online on a dedicated 3D channel directly from the phone and via an HDMI connection to one of LG’s 3D TV’s.

Craig MacLennan, Channel Marketing Manager at LG Electronics Europe commented: “This innovative campaign is the perfect way to demonstrate the glasses free experience of the LG Optimus 3D. It reaches consumers at the critical point of purchase and provides engaging, informative, stunning 3D content.”

The live action autostereoscopic footage was shot from 8 separate camera perspectives with 6 extra virtual perspectives created during post production. 3D CGI graphic elements were composited with the live action sequences.

Stuart Cupit, Managing Director of Inition said: “This cutting edge in-store campaign showcases the Smartphone’s 3D feature set using the breathtaking visual experience of modern glasses-free screen technology. We were delighted to work on the project which drew on Inition’s full range of 3D expertise from technical consultancy and hardware supply, to live action stereoscopic production, CGI and post.”

To say that the global success of 3D cinema in 2011 has been extraordinary would be an understatement.   This is turning out to be another banner year for 3D at the box office.  Although it only played on a little over 3,000 3D screens, 3D accounted for 43% of the over $1 billion in global sales of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ranking it as the ninth film in history to reach the billion dollar milestone (it is now Warner Bros’ biggest international release).  Another 3D release, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, passed the $1 billion mark earlier this summer.   Michael Bay’s 3D blockbuster Transformers: Dark Of The Moon has been a box office juggernaut and is expected to cross the $1 billion mark by next weekend.  However, it wasn’t even Paramount Pictures’ biggest film of the weekend.  The studio’s other 3D flick, Marvel Studios’ Captain America, brought in nearly $25 million this weekend putting its gross at $170 million in less than two weeks since its release.  With more and more 3D ”tent pole” films slated for release by the major studios, expect this box office record breaking trend to continue.    On the home entertainment side, consumers are finding that 3D is one of the funnest concepts since color television.  Based on recent sales reports for 3D Blu-ray, those consumers that have adopted 3D in their homes are hungry for content and have been buying up new 3D discs as soon as they become available.  The growing number of 3D Blu-ray titles combined with the large installed base of 3D-capable Blu-ray players (as well as the rising sales of 3D-ready televisions) will cause sales to sharply accelerate in the second half of 2011.

”Glasses-free 3D” handheld devices are here to stay and will change the way 3D content is delivered to consumers.  With the recent a launch of the Nintendo 3DS, the HTC Evo 3D and the forthcoming LG Thrill and Samsung Galaxy 3D, get ready to see a lot more 3D content for mobile devices.  Along this line, PassmoreLab is continuing to establish itself as the leader in 3D music videos.  With recent 3D projects for Osaka Popstar, Slash, Linkin Park, Plain White Ts and now Memphis High, PassmoreLab is becoming the ”go to” 3D company for music industry executives and artists.

3D Short Film Sunday Jog Available on Nintendo 3DS Handheld Device
NintendoNintendo Nintendo of America announced the release of Sunday Jog on the Nintendo 3DS handheld device.  Since its launch on March 27, 2011, the Nintendo 3DS has taken the gaming market by storm, dazzling consumers with its autostereoscopic 3D technology that incorporates parallax barriers for a seamless glasses-free experience.  In its first three months, the 3DS sold 3.61 million units and the 3DS’s download center, the Nintendo eShop, has had over 300,000 3D game and movie downloads, the largest on-demand library of 3D content.

Sunday Jog blends cute animation and sound with dark, satirical themes pointing at societal absurdity and global warming.   ”It seems like everyone is striving for photo realism these days.  When we originally began developing this project, we were looking to create a fun stereoscopic piece with basic graphics and a retro feel,” said Greg Passmore, CEO of PassmoreLab.  ”The finished product is an animated action film that pays tribute to the classic 1980s arcade games.”  SEE MORE .

Pop Sensation Memphis High’s Hit Song Criminal Love
Memphis HighPop sensation Memphis High’s latest music video, Criminal Love  is now being converted to stereoscopic 3D PassmoreLab is well versed when it comes to 3D music video production and has positioned itself as the ”go to” company for bands and artists that want to distribute content through the very latest 3D delivery platforms.  Grammy-Award winning, Linkin Park converted the videos for Iridescent   (from the Transformers 3 soundtrack) and Waiting For the End into 3D.  Other 3D music videos from recording artists are Slash, the Plain White T’s and Osaka Popstar.  ”With the recent availability of new handheld 3D devices, band managers and labels are seeing 3D as a visual innovation that can transform a music video from primarily a marketing device used to promote record sales into a brand new form of consumer entertainment,” said James Humann, Executive Producer with PassmoreLab.

This is the first time the duo of 16-year old Witt McKay and 17-year old Grant Vogelfanger will be presented in full stereoscopic 3D.  Thanks to power management company The Collective, Memphis High is being touted as the ”next Jonas Brothers” (notably, the 2008 3D film documenting the Jonas Brothers’ Burning Up concert tour went on to gross over $23 million in worldwide sales).  The 3D music video for Criminal Love is now available for digital distribution through PassmoreLab on multiple platforms including mobile devices, video on demand, television broadcast and theatrical.  Licensing info. U. S. Consumers Like 3D Blu-ray
Nielsen VideoScan data indicates that US Consumers like 3D Blu-ray - Counting feature films (159 million) and non-movie content, a grand total of 1.75 million Blu-ray 3D (”BR3D”) units were sold at retail in the first twelve months of the format’s life, according to an IHS analysis of Nielsen VideoScan point-of-sale data.  Another 1.7 million units sold as part of bundling deals.”Once [consumers] have 3D in the home, they love it and are hungry for content, snapping up BD3D movies as soon as they become available.  Sales reached this high level despite the fact that the number of BD3D titles on the market was relatively small compared to non-3D Blu-ray,” said Jan Saxton, senior analyst, film entertainment, for IHS.Reports

Blu-ray graph

A total of 93 BD3D titles were expected for release in the United States during 2010 and 2011, the first two calendar years of the format’s availability.  In comparison, 448 Blu-ray titles were released during that format’s first two years in the market.

Even with the format’s limited number of titles, a total of 507,293 BD3D discs were sold in 2010, comparing favourably with the 363,000 2D Blu-ray units sold in that format’s launch year of 2006.The major reason for the limited number of BD3D titles on the market is the relatively small quantity of 3D titles released theatrically in previous years, according to IHS.  However, this is rapidly changing.  There were 23 theatrical 3D releases in 2010, and virtually all the big tentpole movies this year are being given the 3D treatment, which will allow the release of more 3D titles in 2011 and the following years.  Additionally, studios are already converting some of their major hits from the past 30 years for theatrical re-release in 3D, like Star Wars and TitanicRead On

As we begin the second half of 2011, its looking like glasses-free 3D is the natural next step in portable entertainment.  The technology was first introduced in the U.S. in March 2011 with the Nintendo 3DS handheld portable gaming consoles and now has expanded to include two new smart phones.

First, on June 24, 2011, one of the most anticipated devices of the year made its U.S. debut, the HTC EVO 3D Android smart phone.  It is the very first smart phone in the U.S. to offer glasses-free 3D.  Second, on July 7, 2011, LG announced its entry into the handheld 3D market with the launch of the LG Optimus 3D in Korea (it will be called the ”Thrill” in the U.S. when its released later this month).  These devices are the first of their kind and will represent a major turning point in handheld entertainment.  They both provide a quality seamless 3D experience without the need for glasses.

In addition to several recent 3D TV channel launches, the television industry has seen a recent growth of hardware manufacturers preparing streaming 3D media services to owners of smart TVs.  As these ”TV apps” become a go-to entertainment source for owners of internet-connected 3D TVs, the demand for 3D content will grow exponentially.

In the cinema world, 3D continues to rule the box office.  The 3D three-quel Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned $229 million in its first 10 days and is already the top-grossing movie of 2011.  Below you can read about PassmoreLab’s recent 3D production work on the music video for Linkin Park’s Iridescent – the theme song from Transformers 3.

PassmoreLab Teams with Linkin Park to Produce Iridescent Music Video into 3D
Linkin ParkThe billboard topping artist Linkin Park and Warner Bros. Records has announced the release of the band’s latest music video Iridescent in stereoscopic 3D.  The song plays during the end credits of the number one Box Office film Transformers: Dark of the Moon and the 3D music video will play in select independent theaters worldwide at the end of the movie.

3D Mobile Devices are Finally Here!
HTC 3DWill 3D Phones Fall Flat? Are 3D Phones a gimmick? … Those are just a few of the negative headlines for the new HTC EVO 3D and the soon-to-be released LG Thrill (Optimus 3D overseas) 3D mobile phones.  We recently tested our 3D content on the new HTC EVO 3D (released on 6/24/11) and the 3D is right on with what we expected … pretty good for a first generation 3D mobile device.  As long as you hold the phone about 8″-10″ from your face (looking dead center at the ”sweet spot”) the 3D is actually better than you would expect for ”glasses free” mobile 3D this early into a new technology.  Instead of 3D glasses, these phones use a ”Parallax Barrier” (similar to a lenticular lense) that separates the two images as illustrated below:

Parallax barrier

With the 1.2 GHz Dual Core Processor, Gingerbread Android OS, 1 GB of internal Ram and a 4.3″ Super LCD 540×960 QHD resolution 3D Display … the only disappointing thing about the new HTC EVO 3D is that people don’t know where to go for content!   At this moment, there is only the pre-loaded Green Hornet movie in 3D on the HTC EVO 3D and whatever 3D movies and 3D pictures you shoot yourself.  It also has a 5MP Stereoscopic camera on the back that shoots 720p video and pictures in 2D or 3D (same specs for the LG Thrill).  As we read through the forums, we’ve seen a countless number of people looking for additional 3D content to purchase.

How will the 3D content be delivered to consumers?  The EVO 3D comes with two pre-installed apps called HTC Watch (a demand movie service) and Blockbuster.  LG is promoting content through YouTube’s 3D service and is rumored to have a 3D mobile content streaming app in development (more on this coming soon ..).

What will drive 3D on mobile devices?  Gaming is likely to be the driving factor for 3D mobile.  A trial version of Spider Man 3D comes pre-loaded on the HTC EVO and Gameloft has a half-dozen 3D games available for the EVO 3D.  Consumers can access the Gameloft 3D Store directly from the new phone.  Gameloft is also making games for both the LG Thrill and Nintendo 3DS.

As we near the end of Q2 2011, the year is looking like a breakout year for the 3DTV industry.  Accordingly, hardware manufacturers are continuing their aggressive plans to increase sales of 3DTVs.

Evidence that the industry’s strong commitment to 3D technology is coming to fruition in 2011 is supported by a recent Display Search study.  The report indicates that worldwide shipments of LCD 3DTV panels increased to 1.9 million units in the first quarter of 2011, representing 104 percent growth over the previous quarter. This growth represents a 3.9 percent penetration among all LCD TV panels shipped.  Panel manufacturers are hoping to quadruple the penetration rate to 16.8 percent by the fourth quarter of 2011 and 12.3 percent overall for the year.

Also, according to a recent study called Global Consumer Electronics Market Forecast to 2013, 3DTV is anticipated to show the highest growth rate among consumer electronics products over the next two years.

A large part of the reason for the sharp growth in hardware sales is the greater availability of 3D content.  Purchasing behavior is proving that people will only buy a 3DTV if there is enough content to watch and, in 2010, there simply was not enough 3D content available to motivate consumers.  As we enter Q3 and Q4 of 2011, the availability of quality 3D content is what TV makers are relying on to drive sales.  Content will be the enabling factor for both TV makers and consumers to enjoy the benefits of their respective investment in 3D technology.

Premiere Set for - Ocean Voyagers 3D
OV
3D FILM PREMIERE THIS WEEKEND! – Mammoth humpback whales and the vast blue of the Pacific come to life in full stereoscopic 3D when Ocean Voyagers 3D premieres in Los Angeles’ at the prestigious Downtown Independent Theatre on June 5, 2011 at 8PM.  A joint effort between Feodor Pitcairn Productions and PassmoreLab, the film is an exciting adventure where hardship pushes endurance to the brink, danger lurks around every bend, and where love knows no bounds.Narrated by Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning actress Meryl Streep, and filmed over a 5-year span in the waters of French Polynesia, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond, the film follows a mother humpback whale and her newborn calf in a ”coming of age” journey for the neonate giant.

”The heart of this film is really the relationship between our humpback mother and her calf,” remarks filmmaker Feo Pitcairn, ”we had unprecedented access to these animals, filming them day after day, we established a real bond of trust. This enabled us to get rare and intimate footage  … seeing this footage on a big screen in 3D is the closest thing to experiencing first hand what we experienced while filming them underwater.”

This film is a stirring testament to not only the strength, grace and beauty of these animals, but also a revelation of all the challenges they face, both natural and man-made.  They must persevere through months without food, journeys of thousands of miles, and predation by shark attack — as well as the threat of commercial whaling and entanglement in fishing gear.

”…seeing these animals behaving naturally in their environment, interacting with one-another as only this film could allow, is truly something else,” says Greg Passmore of PassmoreLab, ”…the images are hauntingly beautiful, fascinatingly imaginative.”   LA SCREENING INFO

Global 3D TV Shipments to Witness Sharp Growth
The global consumer electronics industry is set to witness phenomenal growth in near future after the moderation of tough economic conditions.  The digital technology revolution has enabled the industry to earn profit from the growing interaction of digital applications, such as camcorders, DVD player/recorder, digital camera, etc.  Among the products of consumer electronics market, 3D TV is anticipated to show the highest growth rate.   According to a new research report Global Consumer Electronics Market Forecast to 2013, the 3D TV segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 84% during 2011-2013.

The study says that, the volume sales will grow at a rapid pace in a short period as manufacturers have started to implement 3D as a standard feature across their HD flat-panel product lines.  The availability of 3D standard feature at a slightly higher cost will encourage consumers to opt for 3D capable TVs.  Further, it is expected that the US, Japan, and Western Europe will be the key markets for 3D TV sales in coming years.

The report analyzed the consumer electronics market across various key countries including the US, the UK, Germany, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.  See: http://www.rncos.com/Report/IM260.htm.

At the recent CinemaCon movie tradeshow, Jeffrey Katzenberg, George Lucas and James Cameron took the stage and used analogies stretching from the Wright Brothers’ first flight to ancient cave paintings to tell exhibitors that the 3D revolution has only just begun.  The key to helping 3D come of age, they stressed, has been movie theaters’ conversion to digital.  ”Where we are in digital is like 1900 in celluloid,” Lucas said.

In support of their point that we have only seen the tip of the 3D iceberg, last month at Orlando’s international telecommunications trade show CTIA, we saw the announcement of new Android stereo 3D smart phones from LG and HTC (which are expected to hit the stores in the coming months).  Sharp and Samsung already have 3D phones on the market in Japan and Korea respectively. Market analyst In--Stat predicts that 3D-enabled smart phones will surpass 60 million units in 2014.

Additionally, the industry has recently seen launches of 3D capable PCs and laptops from the likes of Dell, Toshiba, LG and Acer and is looking forward to the anticpated launch of Sony’s 3D VAIO by mid-2011.
Also in recent news, major internet--connected 3D TV manufacturers such as Samsung are poised to launch their own 3D delivery platforms this summer.  Approximately 4 million 3D TVs were sold in 2010. Market analyst Display Search estimates that 18 Million Internet connected 3D TVs will be sold in 2011.

All of these recent developments lend credence to the renowned auteurs’ suggestion that it truly is just the start of the 3D revolution.

Samsung Launches 3D VOD Service in Korea, Tells US and Europe to Get Ready
Samsung’s promised 3D video streaming service has gotten the official go-ahead in the company’s home nation today, bringing to fruition a content partnership with DreamWorks Animation.  All the new on-demand media will be accessible via the 3D application on Samsung’s Smart TV platform.  The United States and Europe are next on Samsung’s roadmap for the VOD rollout.  The service will be available all around the world in due course.  Read On.

There Will be Over 100 3D Channels by 2015
Numerous 3D channels have been launched in North America, Europe and Asia in 2010.  More will come in 2011.  In addition to linear TV channels, 3D content is being made widely available on pay-TV providers VOD systems.  Those who are experimenting with 3D VOD now are expected to make linear 3D channels available as well.  The result is an anticipated increase in the number of 3D TV channels to over 100 by 2015, says In-Stat.

”Pay-TV providers around the globe who have HD systems in place have jumped on the 3D content being made available to them at a faster rate than many had expected,” says Michelle Abraham, Principal Analyst.  ”Many took advantage of the World Cup 3D coverage to test transmission of 3D over their networks, and some of them have now launched transmission of regular 3D TV channels.  The competitive nature of pay-TV ensures that once one pay-TV distributor in a country is offering 3D, the others need to be fast followers unless they want to lose their top-tier customers.”  Read On.

Two significant developments occurred in February 2011 that marked a significant step for 3DTV and home entertainment’s three-dimensional future. On February 13, 2011, DirecTV became the first distributor to launch 3Net, a joint venture from Sony, Discovery and IMAX (DirecTV also carries n3D, a 3D channel launched with Panasonic in 2010).  The next day, on February 14th, ESPN3D, which began offering limited 3D broadcasting in June, began offering a full 24/7 schedule of 3D content.  While these announcements mark a big step in the domestic market, the 3D television drive has been global.  UK’s

Sky3D launched last spring and was one of the earliest 3D channels.  Various other trials as well as channel launches have occurred around the world. Channels that have broadcast 3D include SkyPerfecTV in Japan, Sky 3D and Deutsche Telekom in Germany and Orange 3D in France.
According to the Consumer Electronics Association (”CEA”), only 1 million 3D TVs were shipped to retailers last year.  The CEA predicts 3% of homes will have them by December 2011.  It’s a chicken-and-egg problem.  ”There hasn’t been enough (programming) to get people compelled to watch,” says 3Net chief Tom Cosgrove. He predicts ”as we see more content and set sales grow, you’ll see a lot more channels popping up in the next two to five years.  When we’re able to show what we do to consumers, they simply can’t get enough,” says Bryan Burns, who oversees ESPN 3D. ”We went through this with HDTV, and at the time we didn’t think sports TV could get any better.

 Guess what? It has.

Expect to see more 3D networks and specialty channels coming soon, which will only help to drive awareness and demand for 3D TV programming.

Avatar was released a little over one year ago.  For many around the world it was their first 3D cinema experience.  The film’s success in the early months of 2010, began what became a landmark year for 3D around the globe and, as 2010 came to a close, it was clear that 3D is here to stay.   As an illustration of 3D’s impact on the box office last year, during the week prior to Christmas 2010, exactly one year after Avatar’s release, all four of the top films at the Box Office were released in 3D (Tron Legacy, Yogi Bear, The Chronicles of Naria and Tangled). With new 3D developments announced almost on a daily basis and the widespread adoption of 3D technology both in our homes and at theaters around the world, 2011 should be another banner year for the industry.

Plain White T’s Smash Hit ”Rhythm of Love” Now in 3D
Plain White TsPassmoreLab, Plain White T’s and Hollywood Records announced that the Chicago rock band’s video for the hit song Rhythm of Love, will be released in 3D.

It is the band’s first-ever 3D video.  The song is the first hit off the band’s newly released album Wonders of the Younger and was recently #1 on the iTunes Rock Album chart (and has already been certified Gold in the US).

PassmoreLab’s 3D technology was used for the production.  PassmoreLab has been very busy in 3D rock video production lately, producing all 3D on Slash’s #1 Rock Album video for By the Sword with Andrew Stockdale; on Semi Precious Weapons’ award-winning Magnetic Baby; on Osaka Popstar & the American Legends of Punk’s Wicked World; on Sammy Hagar’s Loud; and PassmoreLab is also in pre-production on Run You Down, the first 3D video for Hollywood Records’ all-girl teen rockers Cherri Bomb.

Rhythm of Love 3D music video is now available for distribution worldwide, and can be seen on the new Mitsubishi 3D demo reel in over 11,000 North American retail locations. Read On.

CEO of Grizzly Adams Productions Charles E. Sellier Passes Away At His Home
Longtime filmmaker and television producer, Charles E. Sellier, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on January 31st at his Idaho home.  Mr. Sellier was a good friend and business associate of PassmoreLab.

Sellier was the President/CEO of Grizzly Adams Productions. The company produces and markets family-oriented and faith-based feature films, television series and documentaries worldwide.

Best known for creating the iconic NBC television series, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams in the 1970s, Sellier personally wrote and produced more than 30 feature films and 230 television shows during his career.  Eleven of his theatrical films are among the top 100 all-time independent grossing films, (non-studio releases), with six of those releases ranked in the top 25.

The family requests that Sellier’s life be remembered through donations to his passion, the ABC Foodbank.  Contributions can be mailed in care of Grizzly Adams Productions P.O. Box 298, Baker City, OR  97814. Further information is available through the Grizzly Adams.

NASCAR Airs Racing Special in 3D
NASCAR 3DAfter TNT offered a NASCAR race in 3D last summer that aired on DirecTV, the satellite operator will carry two racing specials in 3D focusing on a different racing series. The hour-long shows will start Feb. 4 on DirecTV’s dedicated 3D channel, n3D, which has Panasonic as a sponsor.

In lieu of carrying a race live, DirecTV will offer some coverage, but also behind-the-scenes footage and interviews of the final race on the Formula DRIFT circuit in 2010.

DirecTV and the racing circuit are co-producers. Indicating that an edited format may allow producers to better capitalize on 3D, DirecTV executive Chris Long stated that the emerging format on TV will ”make every counter steer, plume of smoke and wreck feel like it is happening in the middle of your living room.”

TNT carried a NASCAR race from the Daytona track last July that aired on DirecTV and several cable operators’ systems and in an online version. ESPN will launch a 24/7 3D network in February and will likely offer some NASCAR car races this season.  Also possible is the 100th Indianapolis 500 in May.  The race will already be shot in 3D as an IMAX documentary is being made about this year’s version that is scheduled to be released in the fall.  Read On.

Regal Theaters to Double its Number of 3D Screens
The nationwide movie theater chain, Regal Entertainment Group, recently announced that it plans to double the number of screens in its theaters that can play 3D movies.  That means instead of having 1,500 3D screens across the entire chain, there will now be 3,000.  40% of Regal’s screens will now be 3D-enabled.

”We continue to see high demand from moviegoers for RealD’s premium 3D viewing experience,” said Regal Entertainment Group CEO Amy Miles. ”Doubling our agreement for RealD 3D-enabled screens will allow us to play multiple 3D films at the same time and assure moviegoers the option of seeing films in a premium 3D format.”

Currently, some theaters are forced to phase out movies faster than they’d like, even if they’re still profitable, to make room for new 3D movies. There just aren’t enough screens for most of them to let three or four 3D movies be playing at the same time.

Also, most theaters offer generally the same amount of viewing times for the 2D and 3D versions of the same movie. We have to wonder if Regal’s plan here includes decreasing 2D showings of a 3D movie, thus ensuring more customers will pay that premium.  Read On.

SUNDAY 12/19 – 3D Movie Night in Los Angeles
PL Science DocsThe LA3DClub has teamed up with the Downtown Independent Theater to present screenings of independent 3-D movies in Los Angeles.  On Sunday, December 19th at 8PM the LA3DClub will present a screening of three stereoscopic documentaries produced by PassmoreLab.  In addition, Greg Passmore, the films’ director,  will participate in an audience Q&A to discuss the making of these amazing 3-D educational films:
MicroWorlds is a live-action 3D educational science film that explores the world of life that goes on, unseen, all around us. From the earthworms in our backyards to the alien beauty of a garden snail, MicroWorlds examines the patterns, cycles, and daily rituals that are repeated on every scale, both in nature and in the lives of all creatures.

Physics of Surfing is a 26-minute educational film that uncovers the physical science of ocean waves and the art of surfing.  In this captivating presentation, the filmmakers explore how energy moves through water, building and combining its force, traveling thousands of miles over the course of weeks until the ocean floor underneath disrupts the wave’s formation and causes it to pitch and collapse. The film also investigates the science behind various surfing styles and how surfers instinctively address such notions of gravity and buoyancy while using the energy of motion to ride waves.

The Extreme Nature of Bats is a 22-minute 3D science film that explores not only the truths but the myths and  dark legends that have been associated with bats for hundreds of years. Through the (sometimes frightening) wonders of digital 3D technology, audiences will learn that bats are unique and interesting animals; but, because of fear and misconceptions throughout history, they are also one of the most misunderstood animals in the world.    Read On.

PassmoreLab’s BATS film Wins Award at Dark Carnival Festival
Bats PhotoSan Diego-based 3D Production studio PassmoreLab won another award for their just-released 3D documentary The Extreme Nature of Bats, this time getting the win at the Dark Carnival Film Festival in Bloomington, Indiana, for Best Cinematography.

Called the Sundance of horror, Dark Carnival was named one of the top 25 film festivals by MovieMaker Magazine. Hosted by AMC Monstervision’s horror alum & syndicated film critic Joe Bob Briggs, the three-day festival culminated with the awards ceremony, which included 13 different categories. The Best Cinematography category carried 7 competing nominations.

Shot in Texas, Romania, Belize, Africa and Mexico, the film, which explores the truths, myths and dark legends that have stalked the world’s only flying mammal, closely examines three bat species; the free-tailed bat, the megabat, and the infamous vampire bat. It takes an in-depth look at bats as unique and important animals, but because of fear and misconceptions associated with them throughout history, they are also some of the most misunderstood animals in the world.  Read On.

Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation added six new titles to its joint venture 24/7 3D Television Network which is scheduled to launch in January 2011.

Read more

Svensk 3D-vinst i internationell tävling

Warner Announces 3D Blu-ray Titles

PassmoreLab and Fullfeedback Productions announced this week that the new indie psycho thriller Iron Doors 3D will premiere on Friday, October 1, 2010 as part of the 3DFF at the Los Angeles Film School.

Iron Doors 3DThe 80-minute feature was directed by Stephen Manuel and stars Axel Wedekind.  PassmoreLab handled all aspects of 3D production. Iron Doors 3D Movie Trailer.

”I had a good feeling about this film,” said Greg Passmore, president of PassmoreLab. ”It captured my imagination from the start, and it has quite an unusual approach to the conventional what’s-behind-that-freaky-door fright flick. I knew this deviant, claustrophobic story would translate well into 3D.”

The film is a twisted tale of one man’s intense struggle to free himself from inside a menacing locked vault.  Wedekind’s role called for his character to go without food and water for days, so he took the method approach to his acting. His daily diet consisted of an apple in the morning and a small piece of chicken at night, with nothing in between. He limited himself to drinking only half a litre of water each day, getting very close to actual dehydration.  After the 10 days of production, he had lost 15 lbs.  ”This project is not just another horror film, and I can tell you I gave it everything I had,” said Axel Wedekind. ”It’s scary, creepy and even funny at times, with deeper layers of meaning hidden just beneath the surface of the action on the screen. Definitely expect the unexpected.” Read more

Welcome to the latest issue of This Week in 3D Entertainment.
With the ever increasing adoption of 3D TV sets into homes and the almost daily announcement of new and expanding 3D broadcasters and pay-TV operators worldwide, the demand for 3D content continues to grow exponentially.  This demand, from both consumers and hardware manufacturers, is propelling investment in all genres of 3D content production.  In addition, the availability of PassmoreLab’s state of the art 2D-to-3D conversion technology (and delivery solutions such as 3D Blu-ray, video-on-demand and classroom 3D projection systems) is presenting owners of existing content with new opportunities to re-release whole catalogs of archival films in this new immersive format. The solid box office opening of the R-rated American comedy/horror film Piranha 3D, proves that consumers will buy anything 3D.  Although hardly mainstream fare (the film has been described as a bloody ”onslaught of flesh ripping mayhem”), the gimmicky 3D romp took in nearly $19 million in the first ten days of its domestic release.  Success breeds opportunity.  The film’s distributor, Dimension Films, has already announced that a sequel is in the works. 3D mot genombrottet

Av Lars Danielsson |

Daniel och hans tre kollegor är fulla av tillförsikt. I kölvattnet av 3d-succén Avatar på bio räknar man med ett genombrott på bred front i år. Read more

Ny Teknik writes about WizzCom´s 3D screen

Den nya 3d-skärmen.

Den nya 3d-skärmen. Mynten hoppar ut ur skärmen – och du behöver inga speciella 3d-glasögon för att få känslan av att de studsar ner på golvet hos dig. Foto: Alioscopy

Här ser du i 3d utan glasögon

Read more

Welcome to the latest issue of This Week in 3D Entertainment. 3D continues to reign at the box office.  Disney and Pixar scored their eleventh consecutive hit with Toy

Story 3 which recently debuted at number one (hauling in a staggering $109 million its opening weekend).   It was the second

biggest opening ever for a 3D film after Alice in Wonderland’s

$116.1 million back in March and number one on the list of best June premieres.  In its first four weeks, the film has grossed over $572 million worldwide.Last week’s box office number one – Despicable Me – another 3D animated film – raked in $56.4 million its opening weekend.  While this number fell short of the openings of the summer’s other 3D animated features Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After, the numbers are important because Despicable Me had no built-in audience.  In fact, it was the third biggest-grossing opening ever for a non-sequel, non-adaptation, non-Pixar animated movie behind Kung Fu Panda and Monsters Vs. Aliens. Read more

Welcome to the latest issue of This Week in 3D Entertainment.

Last Friday’s launch of ESPN’s 3D network may impact the 3D TV market in a similar way that Avatar’s release (six months ago) accelerated the expansion of 3D cinema.  Avatar left moviegoers wanting to experience more 3D.  In fact, Alice in Wonderland owes much of its box office success ($1 billion+) to the fact it was the first event movie to be released after Avatar.   A 3D milestone will occur on June 22, 2010 when the 3D Blu-ray DVD of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs goes on sale.  It will be the first Blu-ray 3D movie to be sold individually (previous titles were bundled with 3D hardware). This Week In The News From PassmoreLab

Welcome to the latest issue of This Week in 3D Entertainment. The massive success of James Cameron’s Avatar has stirred
a 3D sensation in Hollywood that some compare to a gold rush.
3D has been responsible for some of the biggest theatrical releases in the first three months of
2010 (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon and Warner Bros.’ Clash of the Titans – all of which had grosses of at least $200
million-$300 million).  2010 will be another banner year for the movie industry.
A Sony Marketing exec recently declared 2010 as ”the first year of the 3D TV era.”   That statement is proving correct as competition in the 3D market has intensified rapidly in 2010 primarily between Korea’s Samsung and Japan’s Panasonic (with Sony poised to enter the race next month). All of the current 3D box office moneymakers will soon be available to consumers as they upgrade to 3D Blu-ray.  Networks and cable companies are beginning to aggressively advertise the availability of 3D programming.  Expect to see a rapid adoption of in-home 3D equipment and a growing demand for diverse 3D content in the coming months. Digital 3D is ushering in a new age of entertainment and education. This Week In The News From PassmoreLab
Welcome to the latest issue of This Week in 3D Entertainment In a recent interview Legend3D President and Founder Barry Sandrew stated, ”Avatar was and is a game changer. And I think Alice is also going to be a game changer.” Undeniably, two events catapulted 3D technology into the forefront in 2010: (1) the release of Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time; and (2) the emergence of 3D TVs at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. In the wake of Avatar, Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland (released on March 5) made $116.1 million in domestic ticket sales on its first weekend. It was the best opening for a 3D film and the sixth-biggest film debut ever. This trend of big-revenue Read more
